The Vision of Soma Community's Ministry

How Soma Became:
In 2001, God led Pastor Day and Tracy Duncan to manifest the concept of educating gay and lesbian Christians so that they would be able to defend their spiritual health. Over the course of the summer, it was evident that the community not only needed general information, but focused discipleship. For, it is not enough to have an idea about Jesus Christ. The great commission employes us to "make disciples" not just make believers. Thus, Soma Community Ministries took on the element of discipleship. In it's fullest, Soma Community Ministries intends to offer accredited leadership training.

The Meaning of "Soma Community":
Soma means body. The idea of Soma Community was developed during a study of 1 Corinthians 12 the summer of. The Universal Church in Christ is called "the body." The greek word used is "Soma." We are, therefore, the Soma de Christos [1 Corinthians 12:12]. The fitting word "community" is a derived from how we describe the GBLT segment of our society. Herein, SOMA COMMUNITY is a description of our audience -- the Gay and Lesbian Christian.

The Ministry of Soma Community:
1. Reach:
those who are seeking a relationship with God; or those who are seeking to develop a deeper relationship with God.
2. Educate:
using the resources of general biblical teaching, directed disciipleship studies, and providing personalized bible studies directed at the needs of the individual.
3. Providing Resources:
offering links to established GLBT resources, book and musical links, and (in the near future) posting an e-newsletter.
4. Virtual Community:
On the Bulletin Board, you will find (upcoming) a Pray List Posting; From the Chapel and Pastor's Study, you will find teachings and meditations for the week. We intend to expand our reach into the established G/L, Affirming, and Reconciling organizations already reaching the community -- our hope is to provide an additonal resource to the community at large.

Mission Statement

There are two main goal of the Soma vision. The first is outreach (evangelism), the second is education (discipleship). The primary focus of Soma is to take every opportunity to spread the truth of Christ's love to the gay and lesbian community. The secondary focus of soma is to educate, motivate, counsel, and edify the body of gay and lesbian Christians to exemplifying God's glory in their lives.
